We would like to help all of our stakeholders to grow by resolving various social issues, including reduction of environmental loads and countermeasures for global warming and contributing to society as a whole through our resource-recycling business that extends from DOWA group's upstream through downstream activities.
DOWA Holdings Co., Ltd. President Masao Yamada
After the Great East Japan Earthquake
We experienced the Great East Japan Earthquake last year and this devastating earthquake made us reconsider the importance of responsibility of a company, in other words the corporate social responsibility (CSR). While economic and social activities mainly in the eastern part of Japan were drastically affected and stagnated by the earthquake, we strongly recognized again our social mission to continue our responsibility of supplying, in other words, our mission is to continuously back up activities of our stakeholders including our client companies through our main business. We are now reviewing our business continuity plan and preparing a new one (BCP), and we are committed to strengthening our responsiveness to an emergency situation and our business infrastructures.
Continued Growth
Acceleration of Global Deployment and More Investment in Growth Fields
DOWA has been expanding the resource-recycling business for more than 120 years and is now aggressively deploying it on a global basis. In 2011 we officially started our heat treatment business in India. We also strengthened our new business lines, including recycling business in China and South East Asian countries. Our basic policy in our Mid-term Plan V (2012 - 2014) that started this year is continued growth, focusing on our further business expansion in dramatically growing emerging countries in Asian. We are committed to accelerate our global business deployment based on our main lines of business in Japan, focusing on Environmental management & recycling, metal processing and heat treatment.
Continued expansion of investment in the growth fields of products related to new energy sources and the environmentally friendly products is one of the important policies of the Mid-term Plan V. DOWA's products have been already used in various growth fields, These growing fields include renewable energy sources including solar or wind power, the next generation batteries of lithium and fuel cells and products of low environmental load free of hazardous substances. We will make active investments to expand each market of the growth fields and strengthen our business.
Globalization of CSR Management
We must further strengthen our global CSR management system and improve our overseas establishments along with rapid expansion of overseas business. While complying with universal rules of the UN Global Compact Guideline in which we participated in 2009, we endeavor to resolve social issues and promote social contribution activities in the local communities where we have deployed our business. Recently we have increased our presence in Asian countries, where conservation of the natural environment and biological diversity are of critical importance. We believe we can make use of our technologies and know-how to reduce environmental burden in those countries that we have cultivated for a long time in Japan.
Globalization of our business has brought us with diversified human resources with different nationalities, value sets and cultural backgrounds, requiring our business management to cater to those diverse strengths. We would like to combine those diversified human resources to create new corporate values through human exchanges across the borders.
This CSR report is intended to inform all stakeholders both in-house and outside of our specific efforts as well as to provide an opportunity for our employees to review their individual activities and create new values. We welcome your suggestions and comments. We will make best use of them to direct our efforts of improving our corporate values towards resolution of social problems and development and growth of our stakeholders.
